Boredom is the biggest disease in the world, darling.Freddie Mercury
Who is Queen?
In case you live under a rock, here is all you need to know about the legendary UK rock band. First, before Queen even existed, guitarist Brian May and bassist Tim Staffell put up a poster in hope of finding a drummer for their college band. Luckily, Roger Taylor came to the rescue and the band “Smile” was born. Why is this relevant you ask? Because, Stafell eventually befriended Farrokh Bursala who went by the name Freddie. After joining Smile he ended up choosing the stage name – Mercury. Then, Tim made probably the worst decision of his life and left the band. In his place, John Deacon took to the stage as their new bassist. At long last, Freddie suggested a new band name for the team and Queen was born.
The start of Queen…
Queen’s first major hit was “Seven Seas of Rye” which was included in their first self-titled album. Best believe that this album was extremely popular and lead to the band making their second and third albums which truly propelled them into fame. They had to say goodbye to performing opening acts for other bands and hello to headlining world tours. Astonishingly, only 5 years after the beginning of their journey, Queen made the album called “A Night at the Opera” which included the world famous song – “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Remarkably, this track went on to be the third-most selling UK single of all time and it also reached the no. 1 Christmas single spot twice, being the only song ever to do so.
By the end of the 70s and headed into the 80s, there was no doubt that Queen was one of the top bands in the world, regularly selling out stadiums and smaller concert venues while continuing to produce top-charting albums. Queen performed on Bob Geldof’s Live Aid in Wembley Stadium on July 13, 1985. This performance was widely remembered as the best performance the band ever gave, Queen amazed an audience of 72,000 (and another 1.9 billion on TV) with a series of their greatest hits, easily stealing the show from acts such as the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Cliff Richard, and Elton John.
What happened next?
After this incredible track record of success, the band and the rest of the world received some tragic news. Freddie Mercury got a fatal diagnosis of HIV in 1987. After continuing to record albums despite his health, Mercury sadly passed on November 23, 1991. As we all know, this is and was not the end of Queen. Deacon ended up retiring in 1997. But since 2004, May and Taylor have continued to tour under the “Queen +” name with vocalists Paul Rodgers and Adam Lambert. More recently, with the release of the exciting new film Bohemian Rhapsody in 2018, even more people were introduced to Queen. Their summer 2019 tour with Adam Lambert sold out stadiums all over the world.
